The short version.

Bryson Champagne is a Division I sprinter and hurdler for the Lamar Cardinals and a Finance major in Lamar’s Class of 2029. Track wasn’t the original plan — it was supposed to make him better at football. At Conroe High — a 6A school and the second-largest high school in Texas, where his graduating class alone numbered around 1,100 — he ran varsity track from his sophomore year and made varsity football as a junior. Then came the hardest call of his young career: walking away from football after fifteen years in the game to go all-in on track as a senior.

The bet paid off — a school-record 36.68 in the 300m hurdles, a top-25 national ranking, All-National and Texas All-State First Team honors, and a full academic and athletic ride to Lamar. Speed runs in the family: his dad ran college track and his mom played college volleyball, both at Northwestern State — and as the oldest of three, he’s used to setting the pace. Off the track he’s a believer first, and a mentor to kids in his church and community.

“I’ve leaned on Jesus for everything up to this point — all of my success is credited to Him.”

— Bryson

“So I do not run aimlessly…”

Athletics

One lap, ten hurdles — the hardest race on the track, run for the Lamar Cardinals.

Year one in Beaumont.

Year one at Lamar tested more than his legs. He’ll tell you honestly: his freshman year stretched him mentally and spiritually away from the track. On it, he built confidence meet by meet and ran with heart — a win in his collegiate debut, finishing as the 32nd-ranked US college freshman in the 400m hurdles, and a team that felt like family fast.

The journey.
